Lyft® disclosed the results of its own review in 2019, which found almost 6,000 incidents of sexual assaults involving passengers on its nationwide platform from 2017 through 2018.

However, the agency agreed to a reduced penalty to $150,000 in exchange for turning over anonymized data about survivors in California and to make an agreement to work with state officials on helping victims and witnesses file reports to the government.

Although Lyft® refused to report what proportion of claims came from drivers or passengers for each category of sexual violence in the safety survey, company officials revealed that:

  • 52% of incidents are reported by riders
  • 38% by drivers
  • 10% by third parties (enforcement officials, regulators, family, friends or news reports)

Victims of these rideshare abuses now have an opportunity for a private case evaluation and compensation in a court of law.

Earlier reports and statistics show a sharp rise in physical and mental abuse at the hands of Lyft® rideshare drivers

A California agency had previously requested Lyft® pay a fine of $59 million for refusing to disclose details that might identify survivors of sexual assaults on its rideshare platform.

NBC News reported the following Lyft® sexual assault statistics released in a 2020 safety survey of the rideshare service:

  • More than 4,000 sexual assaults occurred during Lyft® trips in a three-year period, including 1,807 in 2019
  • 4,158 sexual assaults occurred between 2017 and 2019, including 1,096 in 2017 and 1,255 in 2018
  • The increase in sexual assaults between 2017 and 2019 is about 65%

What’s more, four people were killed in Lyft® physical assaults in 2019, along with 49 deaths in Lyft® collisions.

According to Jen Brandenburger, Lyft®’s head of policy development and research, “While safety incidents on our platform are incredibly rare, we realize that even one is too many.”

We believe that victims should get compensation and justice by confronting Lyft® rideshare drivers and the company protecting them that were allegedly the source of the sexual abuse.
