The FDA said it was aware of infection concerns with the blankets posed by victims in 2017, but the agency recommended that healthcare providers continue using them as directed.

The FDA sent a letter to healthcare providers highlighting the benefits of patient warming devices during surgery–including less blood loss, faster recovery, and decreased infection risk.

The letter said the FDA reviewed medical research and data–and the agency also pledged to “actively monitor this situation.”
